Transforming Exchange Quay with Sustainable HVAC Upgrades
FSW UK is proud to have partnered with Austin Broady Associates and Mitsubishi Electric to project manage a series of sustainable heat pump upgrades at Greater Manchester’s leading office campus, Exchange Quay.

Seeking a Sustainable Heating Solution
Exchange Quay, located in Salford Quays is an iconic business complex providing modern workspaces to leading brands and businesses in the North West. In a bid to create energy-efficient, flexible office spaces for the future, Exchange Quay investment managers Till Asset Management sought a more sustainable solution to their buildings’ heating systems.
Oliver Broomfield, Projects Manager at FSW UK, worked with Austin Broady, a Mitsubishi Electric Business Solutions Partner, to design and install sustainable heat pump upgrades that effectively regulate the building’s temperature while reducing CO2 emissions and aiding Exchange Quay’s transition to energy efficient buildings.

Cutting Emissions, Not Efficiency
The first building to receive this upgrade was Building 8, a ten storey, 116,000ft2 structure reliant on 600kW gas boilers. As a working office space, it was essential that installation could be completed with minimal disruption to tenants.
FSW UK identified Mitsubishi Electric’s CAHV-P500YB-HPB 40kW as the most compatible commercial heating product for this project. The new system utilises the existing four-pipe fan coil units, transforming their previous hardware into an energy efficient heating system that would upgrade the building’s EPC rating from D to B.

Preparing for Future Sustainability Goals
The new system performed very well especially during the Winter ‘24-25 – which was the coldest the region had experienced in a decade – and performed exactly as expected during this period. The success of this project has established a new baseline for sustainable heat pump upgrades not just at the Exchange Quay, but for future projects. The success of this project is now being used as a blueprint for similar ventures in commercial properties across the UK, allowing property management to prepare their assets to meet future sustainability guidance without major disruption to their daily operations.

Oliver Broomfield, Air Conditioning Projects Manager at FSW UK, said:
“When Mark Broady (Austin Broady Associates) commissioned FSW UK to upgrade Exchange Quay Building 8’s heating system, we recognised this project as an opportunity to demonstrate the capabilities of Mitsubishi Electric’s heat pump systems. We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved here in Salford, and we’re looking forward to future projects which can continue to build on this success.”
