CBES & FSW UK Support MNDF in Search for MND Cure
Construction company City Building Engineering Services (CBES) and refrigeration and air conditioning wholesaler FSW UK are supporting research into finding a cure for motor neuron disease with a financial donation to the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
Researching for a Cure
When Scottish rugby union legend George Wilson “Doddie” Weir was diagnosed with motor neuron disease in 2016, he set up My Name’5 Doddie to campaign and fundraise for MND research to aid the search for a cure. So far, the foundation has invested over £19.5 million into MND projects to expedite the development of new treatments.
Since 2017, former Scotland Captain and British and Irish Lion Rob Wainwright has supported the charity set up by his former teammate and friend through My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. His annual personal exercise challenge fundraises for the charity to help achieve their goal of a world free of MND. One of the largest teams raising funds for the charity is Doddie’s Grand Slam Team. This group of charity cyclists undertake annual UK-wide cycling challenges co-captained by ex-Scottish rugby union player Ian Barr and Welsh endurance athlete Rob Boyns. In previous years, their charity cycling route has taken them to every national stadium participating in the Six Nations, and across Australia during the British Lions tour.
Doddie’s Triple Crown
CBES and FSW UK have combined forces to contribute to this charitable cause, throwing their support behind the Doddie’s Grand Slam Team as they take on this monumental task in the name of Doddie Weir. Steve Burns, FSW UK’s National Accounts Manager, joined the team in 2025 and will once again participate in this year’s upcoming challenge. For 2026, the Grand Slammers will complete Doddie’s Triple Crown. Between March 10th and 13th, the group will ride 1,250km (over 775 miles) from Doddie Weir’s hometown of Melrose in the Scottish Borders. They’ll travel through the North West of England, into South Wales before eventually finishing at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin in time for the Six Nations Ireland v Scotland match.
Having raised over £1 million for MND research last year, the Triple Crown looks to smash its fundraising targets to help the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation continue to fund vital research into eradicating this disease from the face of the earth.
Steve Dinning, Managing Director, FSW UK, said:
“Doddie Weir’s courage in the face of his diagnosis and determination to help others in his position is a story for the ages. FSW UK is proud to support the foundation’s aim to eradicate motor neuron disease from the world, and we wish the very best of luck to Steve Burns and the rest of Doddie’s Grand Slam team as they tackle this impressive physical feat.”
Paul Cowan, Refrigeration Director, CBES, said:
“Motor neuron disease is a terrible illness, and CBES is grateful to be able to support an initiative that not only helps alleviate the suffering of those afflicted and find a cure, but also raises awareness of MND and honours the hard work and dedication of a Scottish rugby union legend. We’ll be cheering the Grand Slam team on the whole way from Melrose to Dublin!”
